Frances E. Bartel, age 30, of Iron River, MI, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016.

She was born September 15, 1985 in Managua, Nicaragua. She attended the West Iron County Schools, graduating with the Class of 2003. She then attended Northern Michigan University, Marquette, MI, and later Mount Mary College, Milwaukee, WI, studying Criminal Justice.

She attended St. Agnes and St. Cecilia Catholic Churches. Frances was a global citizen. She cared about everyone. She stood up for all underdogs. Frances radiated spirituality. Her native given name was “Manidoo Kwe Zhinkaazaa“ (Spirit Woman She Is Called).

​

She loved to cook for her friends and family. She loved family gathering and treasured the memories of her early years in Milwaukee, WI with her Nicaraguan extended family. The light of her life was her little Lorenzito. He brought her extreme joy and happiness.

​

 Frances is survived by her mother, Barbara Bartel of Caspian; son, Lorenzo Mateo Bartel of Iron River; brother, Victor Bartel; comadre and special sister, Bexi Spanos; aunts, Carol Hanold, and Joann (Patrick) Wales; uncles, Tim Bartel, and Steve Faehling; cousins, Scott, Rebecca, Brady, Brian, Jennifer “Jen-a-pay”, Chrissy, Rob, Jason, and Ryan; her Nicaraguan Milwaukee family and other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Faehling, grandmothers, Dorothy Bartel and Ruby Crowgey, and grandfather, Irv Crowgey.

Visitation will be held Friday, August 26, 2016 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Iron River.  Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dawn Treado to officiate.
